All through the media and classes all we hear is how natural disasters are getting so much worse. Record breaking number are occurring nationwide when it comes to floods, tornados, lighting storms, and hurricanes. But, has anyone taken the time to help explain why it seems the disasters are getting so much worse?
We can account this dramatic change in the number of tornados in the statistics. History has only been recorded for so long. As technology becomes more advanced, the way we can record things becomes much more advanced. Back in the day many natural disasters weren’t recorded due to the lack of technology. Now that we have Doppler technology, we don’t miss the smaller tornados. We now can record all the small f0 and f1 category tornados whereas before many of those would come and go without valid evidence they were there. Thus, now the trends make it look like there has been an increase in the number of tornados.
We must look at the evidence by itself. We can prove there has been no upward trend in the number of tornados if we compare the number of tornados we could record back then to the ones of that caliber now. If you see the chart the number of severe tornados (f3 – f5) has not changed in the past decades. The trend is not, in fact, getting worse. Technology is getting much better.
So, is global warming really causing the weather to get worse, or do we just now have the technology to record what we were missing before?
